Celebrating Our Differences

Today’s world is still fraught with discrimination. Many will say we have made great progress and have provided equality. Then why do those that identify as LGBTIQ+ still face hate? Why is the phrase “Go back to where you came from” still spoken on the streets? We must never stop fighting for those who are silenced, speaking up for those who can’t brings us all just a little bit closer. It is time we start Celebrating Our Differences.

LGBTIQ+ Pride

Flags have always been an integral part of the LGBTIQ community. They are a visible representation of identity that people use in celebration, in protest, or even as a casual adornment. There have been many LGBTIQ flags over the years. Some have evolved, like the original Pride flag created in 1978 by Gilbert Baker and flown at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day parade. While others are constantly being conceptualised and created.

The 2022 edition of the International Day focuses on the theme “VOICES FOR ACTION AGAINST RACISM”. This edition aims, in particular, at: highlighting the importance of strengthening meaningful and safe public participation and representation in all areas of decision-making to prevent and combat racial discrimination; reaffirming the importance of full respect for the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly and of protecting civic space; and recognising the contribution of individuals and organisations that stand up against racial discrimination and the challenges they face.
